Ph.D.Physical and Materials Engineering

Presently and in the near future, construction industry will face a number of challenges, among others, (i) reducing the consumption of energy and raw materials from non-renewable sources and reducing pollutant emissions during the production of building materials, construction, and the subsequent use of buildings and structures, (ii) repairs and maintenance of deteriorating infrastructure, (iii) preservation of the architectural heritage for future generations or (iv) permanent disposal of radioactive waste. In response to these challenges, significant scientific progress is being made in the areas of innovation and development of construction materials and technologies, mathematical modeling and simulation of complex multiphysical processes and experimental methods. The main goal of the FMI program is to educate highly qualified professionals who will be able to identify these and any emerging challenges and develop adequate solutions for them using state-of-the-art scientific knowledge and methods.
The concept of the study is based on a holistic approach - unification and classification of knowledge, deep understanding of the essence of different types of mathematical models and experimental methods and their interrelationships. Students have the opportunity to get hand-on experience with the state-of-the-art experimental instruments, methods and technologies both during the coursework as well as during their own research. In the course of the study, attention is paid to the development of students' ability to obtain information from international scientific sources and to improve their presentation and publishing skills in English.
In order to achieve the stated goals, the Faculty of Civil Engineering has recently significantly expanded its experimental infrastructure and the offer of doctoral courses. However, the main emphasis is placed on the creative scientific activity of doctoral students. For this purpose, the FMI study program is backed up by a team of faculty members, who belong among the top experts in the field of physical and materials engineering and who are ready to guide students and serve as thesis supervisors. Their erudition is based on long-lasting and extensive scientific and publishing activities and international experience.

Graduate profile

Graduates of the FMI program are equipped with a broad scientific and theoretical basis in the field of testing, development, modeling and application of new and traditional construction materials and elements and find employment not only in the open labor market of the European Union as:
- teaching and scientific staff in academic and other institutions engaged in science, research, development and innovation in the field of construction and materials engineering;
- material specialists and technology experts in industrial companies operating in the field of production of building materials and components;
- conceptual and development experts in production, design, and consulting companies in construction industry;
- specialists in companies engaged in the development of simulation software;
- after gaining experience as executives and senior managers in the above companies and organizations;
- after passing professional examinations as authorized engineers;
- experts in diagnostics and testing in the field of building materials and structures;
- experts in the field of certification of construction products.
