otherOne year intensive program - Animated Film

One Year Intensive Program in Animated Film at FAMU International, part of the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, offers a focused and immersive foundation in animation for those passionate about filmmaking in Prague. Designed to blend artistic development with technical training, the course treats animated film as both a dramatic art form and a kinetic fine art. Students explore a wide range of animation techniques, including stop-motion animation, stop-animation puppet animation, and digital methods, while developing key skills in storyboarding, visual storytelling, and Visual Expression and figural drawing.
Through hands-on exercises and collaborative projects, students learn the fundamentals of character design, puppet structure, and animation theory. Core classes include Experimental animation, Body Animation and Mask, Animation of Drawings, and History and Theory of Animation. Students also take part in Masterclasses with Czech directors of animated films 1 a 2, gaining direct insights from acclaimed professionals in the industry. Studying filmmaking in Prague at FAMU means working in a supportive, small-group environment that nurtures individual creativity. By the end of the course, students will have developed a personal artistic identity and a portfolio of original works – ready for further academic pursuit or entry into the professional world of animation.

Admission requirements

Admission to the One-Year Intensive Animated Film Program at FAMU International, the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, is open to individuals who are passionate about storytelling through animation and eager to explore the dynamic world of filmmaking in Prague. This selective programme is designed for those interested in building both artistic and technical foundations while studying filmmaking in one of Europe’s most culturally rich cities. Applicants must submit a completed application form, either digitally signed or scanned if filled out by hand.artistic experience, and English language proficiency is also required. Academic transcripts from all post-secondary institutions must be included, though secondary school records are optional for applicants with higher-level education. As part of the artistic sample, candidates for the Animated Film specialization must submit an analysis (1–2 pages) of any animated film, an original theme for their own animated film (1 text page, with an optional visual concept), and a .zip file containing 20 original artwork pieces in .png format, each with a minimum resolution of 1500px. Additionally, a Statement of Intent is required, in which applicants should describe what they hope to gain from their studies, what they will contribute to the creative community at FAMU Prague, and why they have chosen to study filmmaking in Prague. Applicants must also submit a one-minute self-portrait video, uploaded to Vimeo or YouTube in HD quality. The video link must be included in a .doc file named appropriately and uploaded with the rest of the materials. The admissions committee looks for applicants with originality, artistic potential, and a sincere commitment to animation as a form of visual and dramatic expression.
