Writing and Filming History: The Representation of the Holocaust in Czech Cinema, 1989-2019

Research at Academy of Performing Arts in Prague

The project discusses a comprehensive set of Czech films (including co-productions) on the topic of the Holocaust made between 1989 and 2019. The objective of this analysis is to discuss the theme of Holocaust representation using Czech films as an example in a theoretical relation between narrative

cinema and history. This applies primarily to the areas where feature films on the Holocaust theoretically converge with the knowledge and hypotheses of historiographic thinking and to the areas where, in terms of the representation of historical events, the work of a film director intersects with the working procedures of a historian who also shares a narrative form and a subjective relationship to historical facts. Understanding history through stories, plots, rhetoric figures and other discourse practices in history and in film with its specific stylistic and narrative system forms a specific, theoretically supported subject of the project purporting to evaluate the extent of their similarities and differences, verification and falsification.
