Ph.D.Sustainable Rural Development in the Tropics And Subtropics
The study program offers cutting-edge insights and skills on the linkages between agriculture, alternative technologies, rural development and social sciences. Taking into account the four major components that have been maintaining rural sustainability, namely reproduction of the local population, reproduction of material goods, continuations of social organizations and conservation of natural ecosystems, the program aims to provide training on how agriculture can contribute to poverty alleviation and rural development in low-income countries, as well as focusing on the dynamic interactions between local livelihoods in rural areas and agriculture understood as a globalised industry. The program also advances an interdisciplinary perspective on the linkages between global, national and local-level processes shaping agriculture and rural development by integrating knowledge from the social sciences, economics and natural resource studies; the course combines the delivery of theoretical knowledge with empirical insights and case studies. The program is intended for applicants with interest in international organizations, NGOs, business. The pathway allows flexibility in choosing courses that suits specific interests of the students. Research topics include: Impacts of agri-environment schemes and rural policy with a focus on policy development and farmers' decision making; sustainable management of natural resources, minimal technologies.
