Ph.D.Biomedical and Clinical Technology

Czech Technical University in Prague - Faculty of Biomedical Engineering

The study program Biomedical and Clinical Technology is focused on independent research work in the multidisciplinary environment of biomedical engineering (BME). BME is a young and rapidly developing discipline. It came into being out of the need to separate the field describing interactions with living organisms ? specific due to a series of requirements, above all of an ethical character ? out of the traditional engineering disciplines. As concerns biomedical and clinical technology, these requirements are represented above all by operational reliability, harmlessness to health, good accessibility for all inhabitants, the pressure of the public on a quick cycle from a scientific discovery over development up to production or routine utilization of medical devices in the entire network of hospitals, together with methods for optimizing their implementation. Out of professional point of view, this is a markedly interdisciplinary study. Quantitative, analytical and integrative methods, as well as modelling from the molecular level up to the entire organism are applied both to the support of understanding to the fundamental biological processes and to the development of innovative approaches, methods and apparatus for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Doctorate candidates are involved, according to their master education, in scientific and research projects at individual department, and they are motivated by the study rules to define and solve their own research projects. During the study they are encouraged to independently publish the results of their research work.

Graduate profile

PhD graduates are involved especially within the interdisciplinary teams in large (especially university and regional) hospitals, universities in teaching and research work, research laboratories Czech Academy of Sciences and departmental research institutes and within the development departments of large companies focused on medical technology.
