The conference is held to mark the anniversaries of 17th Novembers 1939 and 1989. Since the end of October 1939, Czech students held protests against the occupation of the country by the Nazis. A student of medicine at Charles University, Jan Opletal, was shot during a demonstration and later died. All Czech Universities were closed afterwards. This very day was pronounced the International Student’s Day. After 50 years, on 17th November 1989, students commemorated the International Students’ Day in the communist regime and these were the students who started the Velvet Revolution and the following changes, which resulted in the accession of the Czech Republic to the EU.
