The Ph.D. program General Animal Science is oriented towards deepening and specialization of students' knowledge in the disciplines whose findings form theoretical basis and methodological approaches subsequently applied in the animal husbandry itself. It reflects a shift from a purely economic focus of zootechnical branch to a broader understanding of the animal husbandry issues, involving breeding of livestock, as well as of pets - as domesticated as non-domesticated species. Individual dissertations are dealt mainly at five faculty departments - Department of Genetics and Breeding, Department of Microbiology, Nutrition and Dietetics, Department of Husbandry and Ethology of Animals, Department of Veterinary Sciences and the Department of Zoology and Fisheries. However, individual student learning plans are based on specific needs of topics addressed and not limited by the scope of these departments. Cooperation with other scientific research institutions, such as institutes of the Academy of Sciences or departmental research institutes, is a significant aspect supporting the range of dealed issues and the scientific level of dissertations also.
